I can't remember the level of authentication that worked for Thunderbird, but I had to drop to PLAIN in the server's mail settings for Outlook to work. I was able to connect to IMAP with both clients using the SSL connection. I got a Windows 7 netbook to run QuickBooks and Office 2010 and now I'm trying to connect either the Outlook 2010 client or a Thunderbird client with one of my Snow Leopard Server mail accounts so QuickBooks can send invoices, etc.
I use CRAM-MD5 authentication and SSL connections for both IMAP and SMTP.
I have a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server running mail.
